Apple Music swaps red icon for monochrome design in iOS 27.2 beta

Apple has replaced the signature red Apple Music icon with a black-and-white version in the latest iOS 27.2 beta, according to 9to5Mac. The updated glyph also appears in new widgets and matches a logo spotted on the Apple Music Hall website last month.

Apple has quietly introduced a monochrome replacement for the long-standing red Apple Music icon in the iOS 27.2 beta build, a change first reported by 9to5Mac.

The new glyph renders as a black eighth note on a white background when the system is in light mode, and inverts to a white note on black in dark mode.

Designers also sharpened the angle of the note’s flag, giving the symbol a slightly more geometric profile compared with the softer curve used since the service’s 2015 launch.

A matching logo appeared on the Apple Music Hall website roughly a month earlier, suggesting the refresh was planned across multiple touchpoints before the beta rollout.

Beyond the home-screen icon, Apple Music widgets have adopted black backgrounds, aligning the glanceable views with the updated visual language.

The beta release notes do not mention the redesign, leaving it unclear whether the new icon will ship with the next public iOS update or remain a test-bed experiment.

Apple has not issued a statement on the change, and the company’s human-interface guidelines have not yet been updated to reflect the new asset specifications.

Developers who rely on the MusicKit framework should verify that custom UI referencing the old red icon still meets contrast requirements under both appearance modes.
